PS Vita - New Q&A With Shuhei Yoshida

The question and answer (Q&A) session that follows was published by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) as part of the recently revealed ‘Inside PS Vita’ program, which is available for all gamers to register with free of charge

How do you feel the reception to PS Vita from the public and the media has been?
It's been fantastic. We have worked hard on the PS Vita platform from the software development and creative standpoint, and judging from consumer and media feedback, our belief on various aspects of developing PS Vita has been well founded. The feedback we have been getting from game developers has been enormously positive, too. Overall, the reception has been hugely energizing.

How long have you been discussing and developing games for PS Vita?
Since the beginning of 2008, WWS have been officially involved in the development of PS Vita by SCEI, and not just with developing games, but in the development of the various aspects of the platform itself too, such as hardware performance and component choices, form factor, usability tests, connectivity, user interface and features, target audience, business models and software product portfolio. In short, everything.

What key learnings were you able take from your work on PSP?
PSP was an impressive piece of hardware when it debuted, with the core performance and the screen enabling PlayStation 2 quality games on the go. However, as the home console generation moved to PlayStation 3, consumers felt games of a similar quality should be playable on handheld consoles too. PSP suffers from the lack of dual analog input, which limits the types of games that play well and PlayStation Network was not supported at launch, although this was added at a later date. Clearly, we have given a lot of thought to this and developed the network plans for PS Vita based on our experience with PSP.

How does PS Vita open up the portable PlayStation experience to new genres?
Various unique user interfaces and digital distribution will help developers experiment with many different types of games, whether they be intuitive, casual games using dual touch; augmented reality games; location based fun activities or network only, free to play, online games. The possibilities are endless for creative developers.

How much storage will the new physical media allow and what kind of content will be included on it?
Games will be made available via the new game media, which is based on flash memory, the storage capacity of which will be larger than Universal Media Disc. As it is flash memory based, you will be able to store game saves on it, not just the game itself, as well as some downloadable content if space allows.

What games are you most looking forward to?
I'm looking forward to playing action adventure titles and first person shooters with gorgeous graphics using the dual analog sticks, as well as some new, unique titles which will make use of the PS Vita user interface. I'm intrigued to see what developers will come up with using the rear touch pad too. Finally, I'm looking forward to seeing how the location based info will be used to enhance games. It is exciting to think how you can integrate your location data into the actual gameplay.

How much input has there been from non-SCE developers?
The PS Vita development team visited many developers and publishers globally with an early prototype of the hardware to get direct feedback. I also personally joined some of the meetings to discuss various aspects of PS Vita and the options we were looking at. The input of other developers outside of WWS has been essential for us to make final decisions on PS Vita. As a result of this, we went through many iterations of PS Vita. It reminded me of the early days of the original PlayStation, when we visited many developers and publishers to get feedback during the development of that product. It's almost as if SCE has gone back to basics, which should be a good thing

Are you planning to provide bespoke games for PlayStation Suite?
Yes, we are looking to provide short form games on PS Suite, which will run on both PlayStation Certified Android devices and PS Vita. However, the true heroes on PS Suite will be small, independent developers, who are much more nimble and have some creative ideas that have never been seen before. I'm very excited to see what kinds of game these small developers will provide via PS Suite later this year.

How will the types of game in development progress over time?
We are working on our popular series as well as brand new concepts, large games and short form games, augmented reality games, touch only games and network only games. We are also looking to expand over time from hardcore to casual games, games for younger consumers and non-game applications as well. We understand traditional games are not the only entertainment that people look for, and PS Vita allows us to develop various types of entertainment on the same hardware platform, which is very exciting.

BioShock Vita To Be A Strange Game And Will Surprise You

Speaking to IGN, Ken Levine said: That's a new game. That is going to be strange and surprising to people, in the same way. I think when we launched Infinite, people said, "Wait, what, what are you doing?" I think we always want to surprise people. If I'm just saying, "Here's BioShock 1 on Vita"... Let's say we potentially do, you don't need us to do that, somebody could make that happen if they wanted that to happen.

For us, it's like, "Hey, here's this weird experiment you want to do." Experiments always carry risks, though. That's been the experience of working on BioShock Infinite. And working on BioShock. People saying, "This is weird, risky, I don't understand." I'm fortunate that I get to do things that are risky, my team gets to do things that are risky.

All I'll say is that it's its own thing, being built from the ground up.

Dragon's Crown - Flexible Quest System

Instead of clearing stages, think of Dragon’s Crown as a game that’s broken into quests producer Kashow Oda explained to Dengeki PlayStation. Dungeons in Vanillaware’s beat ‘em up have multiple routes and you’ll have to follow specific paths to obtain items. The next time you visit the same area you may do different actions, which changes how the area feels.

Oda gave a specific example, at one point in the game you can steal an item from a boss monster. Steal the treasure and you’ll tick off the boss who will retaliate by chasing you through the stage – even into different dungeons. Oda says players have choices in the game like deciding to fight, run away, or to search for secrets within a stage. Altogether, Oda says the game has between 40-50 hours of play time.

You don’t have to complete quests alone, Dragon’s Crown has a multiplayer mode. Yes, it’s possible for everyone to be the sorceress. The game will display a players name and a color variation (red, green or pink were listed as examples) so you can differentiate who is who. Having an entire group of sorceresses turning enemies into frogs may not be the best strategy. To remedy this, Dragon’s Crown has items, equipment, and magic, which can compliment players. Oda hopes teams will discuss which party to use before tackling a quest. Fighters, for example, have high defense and can act as tanks by protecting the entire party. Dragon’s Crown has an in-game communication system too. Oda says, you can respond with "thank you", shown as a pop-up image in the game, after a fighter covers you from an attack. A single player game ends when you run out of lives.

PS Vita - Sony's Most Successful Hardware Launch Since The PS2 ?

Who can forget the PlayStation 3′s first couple of years? From weird ads, very few good games and an unaffordable price tag, Sony's successors to the PS2 got off to a disappointing start. Thanks to that bad experience Sony Computer Entertainment has learned from the mistakes of the past. This is evident with the successor to the company's first handheld. The launch of the PlayStation Vita is still a few months off but the system has already gained appeal from both developers and gamers.

Unlike the PS3 at launch, the Vita is an affordable machine for developers to work on out of the gate. Plus with a price beginning at $250 the Vita is poised as an attractive purchase for those looking for the perfect gift for friends and/or family this holiday.

Let's not forget that software for the system will be $20 less than PS3 games, while at the same time most titles for the Vita will look almost as good as those on the PS3.

In contrast to the PS3 numerous third party developers already have games in the works for the Vita and promise to support the new hardware from day one. Sega, Capcom, Namco, Konami, Activision, 2K Games are just a few third party developers currently working on new titles for the Vita with a good chance that many of these games will be out at the system's launch or within 6 months afterwards. It took some time before western developers began putting any effort into their PS3 games.

It also took a good couple of years before any decent games hit the PlayStation 3 that warranted a purchase of the expensive console, however, that won't be the case with the Vita. Popular games like Uncharted, Call of Duty, Bioshock, Little Big Planet and BlazBlue hitting the system at or around launch. The Vita also has a fair share of impressive new IPs coming soon for the system as well.

Barring any unforeseen problems or delays Sony's PlayStation Vita could be the company's most successful hardware launch since the PS2.

PS3 Games Can Be Better On PS Vita

Despite a lot of talk of the PlayStation Vita being able to match home consoles in the visual department, Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida has said that the standard of modern graphics meant that being close to the home experience wouldn’t have been enough for the Vita on its own, leading Sony to innovate in areas such as touch and motion control when designing the handheld.
“After a couple of years with the PSP people get used to looking at pretty pictures and especially after the launch of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 the expectations for graphics moves on,” the President of Sony Worldwide Studios said.
“Just having great graphics on a pretty screen wouldn’t have been enough. That’s why we spent so much time innovating with user interface devices like the touch pad or camera and motion sensors.”
But Yoshida now believes that the resources put into these areas means that the Vita can surpass its home console big brother when dealing with franchises such as Uncharted: “We really want our developers to be able to look at all the additional UI’s and connectivity features that Vita has, and how you can make their PS3 games even better, more intuitive on PS Vita.”
“When you try Uncharted on PS3 graphically you can compare it to Uncharted 3, but the unique way that PS Vita version uses the touch, the camera and motion sensors you should feel that this is an Uncharted experience on PS Vita that you can’t get on PlayStation 3,” he told gamesindustry.biz. “That’s what we’re trying to achieve.”

Dragon’s Crown - New Interview

Dengeki PlayStation recently sat down with Ignition Entertainment’s Kashow Oda to talk VanillaWare’s upcoming Dragon’s Crown for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita. The interview dives deep into the upcoming role-playing game, announced last month at E3.

Oda was surprised at the positive reaction the game received in Japan. The positive overseas reaction was apparently expected because, according to Oda, VanillaWare is very popular in the west.

The game is being made to allow both low-level and high-level players to play together. Rather than leveling through a numbered system, players will instead use items to become stronger. When in multiplayer, low-level players matched with high-level players will have the opportunity to gain more powerful items, if taking on a difficult dungeon.

Your party can consist of any combination of characters. Everyone can be elves, or everyone can be sorcerers. Some dungeons may be more difficult with certain party formations.

At the current point in production, there are already a large number of quests you can take from the guild. Some of the dungeons are so big that you won’t be able to explore them fully during a single quest.

Your actions may affect the game world. A certain boss enemy, for example, may chase you throughout the stage if you make him mad, and may continue follow you through other dungeons, as well.

Two classes, the fairy and thief, are solely support characters. They will accompany you as NPCs throughout a dungeon. The thief, for example, will steal a new weapon for you if yours is lost in battle.

A “Bone Collection System” allows you further interaction with off-system players. Throughout dungeons, you’ll find bones. The remains of other players, you can take the bones you find to the shrine in your town and revive the dead players into NPCs.

All that said, Dragon’s Crown is a 40 to 50 hour game.

BlazBlue Continuum Shift II Plus Vita Has New Story Modes

Developer Aksys Games re-released its sequel to the original BlazBlue, BlazBlue Continuum Shift 2, on both the PSP and the Nintendo 3DS, and now says that the game will be treated to some brand new features in its transition to the PlayStation Vita.
In a recent interview with Siliconera, producer Toshimichi Mori detailed some of the new features coming to the game, which is tentatively titled BlazBlue Continuum Shift 2 Plus, like all new stories, modes and revamped network functionality:
It will have the two scenarios from the PSP/3DS releases and three to four more stories will be added. We’re also looking at network functions for 3G functions, but that is to be determined. We’re also adding team matches for network play, so we will have many more modes.
When pressed about the possibility of new control options via the system's touch screen and rear touch panel, Mori said that the team was currently experimenting with some ideas, but nothing has been nailed down quite yet:
We plan to add a new control scheme using the touch panels. We’re still experimenting and working on it to see how it feels.
And what's fueling all these multiple ports? Mori thanks the cyclical tastes of gamers, which he says are currently hankering for fighters:
Games trends are cyclic. RPGs, for example, can be really popular at one time and then come back later on. Action games, shooting games are like this too. Now is the time for fighting games.
